There's no place like Barnard!
When Barnard was founded in 1889, very few American colleges offered women the same rigorous education available to men. Honed over 126 years, Barnard’s strengths are exceptional: a faculty truly committed to the integration of teaching and scholarship, a highly intelligent and motivated student body, an integral relationship with Columbia University, and unparalleled access to the resources and networks of New York City. Over the past four years, seniors have benefited from this unique environment.
Now is your opportunity to “give forward” by donating to the Senior Fund. With your help and enthusiasm, the senior class can make an impact through a wonderful gift that provides valuable support to the Barnard community.
The class of 2017 Senior Fund’s gift is two-fold. 25% will enhance a new endowed scholarship that will provide a full scholarship to a student displaced from an area of conflict. 75% will replenish the Bear Essentials Fund. Started by the class of 2010 Senior Fund, it provides much-needed funds for things not covered by traditional financial aid packages. Examples include winter coats and boots, dorm bedding and even Metrocards to be used during the New Student Orientation Program. The Bear Essentials is an expendable fund and completely used each year. Only gifts made to the Senior Fund can replenish the Bear Essentials Fund.
Prior to Commencement, the senior class votes on how they would like the Senior Fund to be utilized. Past examples include:
- 2016: The Bear Essentials Fund and repurposed seating for The Milstein Center
- 2015: The Bear Essentials Fund and a dedicated tree
- 2014: Renovation of the Torchbearer Statue and an expendable scholarship
- 2013: A sustainability initiative
