Summer research is essential for any student pursuing a degree in the sciences and a prime opportunity for projects that require extensive training. Over ten weeks, students in the Summer Research Institute (SRI) have the opportunity to interact in a professional way with their mentors and to experience peer-based “cascade” learning—wherein senior students help train their juniors.
Combining research with community building, the SRI encourages students to develop new professional and personal networks, a skill that is particularly important for women to advance in their careers. It also fosters students’ understanding of science’s interdisciplinary nature, improves their presentation skills, and allows Barnard to assess summer student learning and career trajectories. Research experiences are supplemented with academic and skill-building experiences, lectures, social events, and a capstone poster event at the summer’s end.
Your gift to the Summer Research Institute provides funds for program costs including student fellowships, faculty stipends, travel, and on-campus housing.
